Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese • Kearney, Nebraska
A warm Orthodox Christian parish at 1505 Avenue G, rooted in the ancient Church of Antioch and serving Kearney and Central Nebraska since 1903.
Plan your visit
Visitors are welcome even if Orthodox worship is completely new to you. You will see icons, candles, incense, chanting, standing, and ancient prayers. You do not need to know every custom before you come — simply be present, listen, pray as you are able, and ask questions afterward.
Sunday Divine Liturgy is the central worship service of the Orthodox Church and usually lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. Coffee hour and conversation afterward are often the easiest way to meet the parish.

SeasonalOur story
Between 1889 and 1903, a number of Arab Christian families moved to the Kearney area from Syria and Lebanon. They organized themselves into the St. George Society and founded St. George Orthodox Christian Church in 1903.
Fr. Nicola Yanney, one of the early immigrants to the Kearney area, was ordained the following year, becoming the first resident Orthodox Christian priest to serve an Arab Christian community west of the Mississippi River.
Today, St. George continues as a diverse parish community within the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, sharing the Apostolic Faith of the Early Church with all who want to learn more.
About Orthodoxy
Saint George belongs to the family of Christian communities descended from the Church of Antioch — the place where the followers of Christ were first called Christians. The parish website should help seekers understand worship, icons, sacraments, fasting, prayer, Scripture, and the life of the Church without overwhelming them.
Patron & founders
The patron of the parish is Saint George the Great-martyr, one of the most beloved saints of the Church, commemorated on April 23.
St. Raphael helped organize the local Arab Christian community into a parish during missionary journeys across the United States.
Learning & formation
The current site includes Orthodox PT audio, a church history class library, catechism material, special lectures, elder videos, and journeys to Orthodoxy. This section turns those deep archives into a clearer resource hub.
Saint George Church Hall Project
Saint George is planning a new church hall designed with local architectural firm Wilkins ADP. Priorities include handicap accessibility to the hall and church, fellowship space for 160 people, classrooms, educational space, a large kitchen, and a courtyard for outdoor fellowship.
Stewardship
The current parish site invites people to support the church by worshiping with the parish, spreading the word, pledging financial support, and praying for the community.
Whether parish member or visitor, prayer strengthens and encourages the parish.
A personal invitation to “come and see” remains one of the clearest ways the Church grows.
Financial support helps the parish meet growing needs and continue its ministry.
Ask the Lord to strengthen, help, and guide Saint George according to His will.
